How to Book a Mainland China Train as a Foreign Visitor

A China Railway high-speed train at Nanjing South Railway Station

Mainland China sells its trains under a real name, on a real document, through a channel the railway will stand behind. For a visitor that document is almost always a passport. The channel is 12306: the English website at 12306.cn, the 铁路12306 mobile app, and the ticket windows and machines inside stations.

China Railway’s English FAQ names www.12306.cn as the official site of China Railway Customer Service Center, and says the railway will not handle ticketing problems that occurred on other websites.

How do I register on 12306 with a foreign passport?

Do this before you need a seat. An unverified account can browse trains and still fail at payment.

On the English site, only valid foreign passports usable according to related regulations are accepted. The same logic holds in the app. Choose Passport (护照) as the document type. Copy the name as printed on the bio page — spaces included, order unchanged. 12306’s identity-verification notice tells foreign-passport users to enter English names in the sequence shown on the document. A middle name omitted on the screen and present in the booklet is a mismatched identity. The gate will treat it that way.

You also need a way to be reached. A bilingual guide published by Guangdong’s official information service, citing 12306, says a foreign passport holder may enter either an email address or a mobile number in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan. Email registrants receive an activation message from 12306@rails.com.cn. Check spam.

What is real-name ticketing, and why must the name match?

China Railway has implemented real-name ticketing. The English FAQ is the right text: when you buy, show a valid ID of the passenger. Foreign passengers can purchase with valid passports usable according to related regulations. The ticket is a record bound to one document, not a PDF you flash at a stranger.

A single valid identity document may buy only one ticket for the same train on the same travel date. You may add other passengers after they too pass verification. On the English site you can add other foreign-passport holders. The Chinese app is the fuller place to manage a mixed list; every name must still match a document.

Registration is not permission to buy. On the website the successful state is “Successful” (已通过); in the app it is often “Authenticated” (已实名认证). Pending and failed accounts cannot purchase tickets or add other passengers.

Automatic checks sometimes pass on the first attempt. If they do not, 12306 lets foreign-passport users upload a photograph of the bio page and a photograph of themselves holding that page. The Guangdong guide, again sourced to 12306, says manual review usually takes three to five working days. The railway’s own notice also allows you to take the original passport to a station ticket window and finish verification there — often the fastest path if you are already in China. China Railway’s passenger-transport rules, as printed in the 12306 ticketing guide, list a foreigner’s passport among documents accepted at windows.

English 12306 website or the Chinese app: which should I use?

Use both, for different jobs.

The English website at 12306.cn offers purchase, endorsement (change of date, train or seat), refund, and change of destination. It accepts only foreign passports. Ticket sales and changes run from 05:00 to 01:00 the next day Beijing time, and until 23:30 on Tuesdays. Information queries and refunds run around the clock.

The Chinese app, listed as 铁路12306, is the fuller official product. Waitlist (补购票) and the 2026 Beijing–Shanghai reservation desk (预约购票) live there. Facial identity verification — which the English FAQ requires before you can endorse or refund some tickets bought at a window — is an app task. Some versions offer an English language toggle; the reservation section is still labelled 预约购票. A Chinese-only screen is not a fake app. It is the railway’s main door.

If the English interface feels incomplete, switch. If both frustrate you, the window with a passport still works.

How far in advance can I buy a mainland train ticket in 2026?

As of 30 August 2026, China Railway has not published a single nationwide booking-open calendar that covers every train for the National Day rest of 1–7 October. Treat blog countdowns that name a precise hour for “all Golden Week tickets” as unofficial unless they quote 12306.

What 12306 does publish is a rolling presale calendar (预售期). The railway’s ticketing-means text states that the ticket presale period is 15 days (including the current day), and that the railway announces any adjustment in advance. The same wording appears in China Railway’s Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong ticketing rules on 12306. In late August 2026 the system’s live presale query showed internet, telephone and station sales opening about fifteen days ahead, counting the travel day.

That is the usual window for most mainland trains. Confirm the live date for your origin, destination and train in the app. Stations release seats at different clock times; 12306 has a separate query for start-of-sale hours.

If you are riding toward Hangzhou’s lake or Beijing’s lanes after you land, book the long-distance leg first. See West Lake Hangzhou first visit and walking Beijing hutongs.

What is a reservation versus a ticket on the Beijing–Shanghai line?

A reservation is a request. A ticket is a paid, named seat (or berth) on a train. China Railway has been explicit about the difference.

From 20 July 2026, China Railway began a reservation-ticketing pilot on more than two hundred trains on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line and the conventional Beijing–Shanghai railway. The figure and the start date come from China Railway’s passenger centre, reported by People’s Daily on 18 July and by Xinhua, citing CCTV, on 20 July.

How those reports set it out:

  • File a request in the 12306 app’s “reservation ticketing” section (预约购票) from sixty days to seventeen days before departure. The English website is not the desk for this.
  • The system fulfils orders from twenty days to sixteen days out. Xinhua’s railway briefing says sixty days is only the longest you may ask; submitting the form does not mean the ticket is in hand.
  • If the system matches you, pay by 23:00 Beijing time that day. Miss the cut-off and the order cancels.
  • From 20 July to 29 August 2026 the railway ran a transition (15 September and later, in sequence). From 30 August 2026 the arrangement is a regular sixty-to-seventeen-day reservation on those pilot trains.

That is not a national Golden Week timetable. It is a Beijing–Shanghai experiment. If your journey is not on those services, you are back on the ordinary fifteen-day presale.

The State Council’s 2026 holiday notice (国办发明电〔2025〕7号) sets National Day rest from 1 to 7 October, with makeup workdays on Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October. Mid-Autumn is a separate three-day weekend, 25–27 September — the festival table is in Mooncakes and a Friday Night Moon. Those dates matter here only as calendar context: offices are open on the makeup days, and the days beside a long rest are the ones travellers watch on 12306. This is not a holiday overview.

How do I buy, pay, change, and board?

Once verified, search origin, destination and date. Large cities have more than one station. Beijing South is not Beijing Railway Station; Shanghai Hongqiao is not Shanghai. Pick the station your hotel can actually reach.

Choose the train and class the page offers that day. Do not invent a fare from a screenshot last year. Pay with a method the checkout actually offers. 12306s internet-ticketing note lists mainland bank net banking, UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Do not assume a foreign bank card will clear, and do not assume it will not. If online payment fails, a station window remains an official channel.

Most high-speed services are e-tickets. Keep the e-ticket information and the identity document used to buy it, and show that document to enter, exit and board. The paper “itinerary sheet” is not a ticket. Neither is a reimbursement receipt. If an automatic gate does not read a foreign passport, use the staffed lane. That is normal.

Stations stop checking some minutes before departure; the time is posted locally. Carry the original passport, not a photo of it.

Carry the original passport. Stations halt checks some minutes before departure; expect a queue at security. EMU luggage limits are in the English FAQ (20 kg and 130 cm per item for ordinary adults). Security screening is compulsory.

Changes and refunds follow published 12306 rules and can usually be completed in the app or on the English site if payment was electronic. Fees depend on how close you are to departure — read the live FAQ table. Endorsement needs a free seat. Cash purchases and tickets with a printed reimbursement receipt generally go back to a window.

What if the train is sold out?

12306 offers a waitlist (候补购票) after a train shows as sold out. Treat it as a chance, not a promise. You need a person-and-ID check; foreign-passport users who uploaded photos and passed are among those listed. You prepay; unmatched money returns by the original route.

If the English interface, the Chinese app and the waitlist all fail, the window with a passport still sells what the station has. That is how visitors actually book a mainland train: 12306, a passport, and a real-name ticket that exists only when the name on the screen matches the document in your hand.

FAQ

Can foreigners buy China train tickets on 12306 with a passport?

Yes. China Railway’s English FAQ states that foreign passengers can purchase real-name tickets with valid passports usable according to related regulations. On the English website, only those passports are accepted. Register, complete identity verification, and travel with the original document used in the order.

How many days in advance can I book a China train ticket in 2026?

For most mainland trains the published presale is fifteen days including the travel day, unless 12306 announces a change. As of 30 August 2026 there is no official nationwide Golden Week open-sale calendar. On the Beijing–Shanghai pilot trains only, the 12306 app’s reservation desk takes requests from sixty to seventeen days out and fulfils them from twenty to sixteen days out.

Is a 12306 reservation the same as a train ticket?

No. China Railway’s 20 July 2026 briefing, carried by Xinhua, says submitting a sixty-day reservation does not mean the ticket is in hand. The system tries to fulfil the request from twenty to sixteen days before departure. You become a ticket-holder only after you pay by 23:00 on the fulfilment day. If your train is not in the Beijing–Shanghai pilot, buy inside the ordinary fifteen-day window.
