The office empties; your calendar does not
Golden Week can mean fireworks for your teammates and Slack badges for you. Maybe you are on a global team that does not pause for China’s National Day. Maybe you chose to stay in the city. Maybe you are abroad visiting family while still carrying China-timezone tasks. Whatever the shape, working remotely while your local team is away is a different skill from working through Golden Week in a half-open office.
National Day Golden Week runs roughly 1–7 October 2026. Mid-Autumn is Friday 25 September (~25–27 September holiday), then workdays 28–30 September, with makeup Saturday 10 October 2026, per State Council notice 国办发明电〔2025〕7号. Use the bridge week to set coverage docs before people vanish. Calendar: China fall 2026 public holidays, between Mid-Autumn and Golden Week workdays.
Related but different: working Golden Week as a foreign employee (often office-presence framed) and politely refuse Golden Week group trips (social, not async work).
Decide what “on” means before 1 October
Clarify with your manager by 28–30 September:
- Which hours you will be reachable in China time
- Which tasks are blocked without local approvers
- Who is the emergency escalation path (and who is truly offline)
- Whether clients were warned about delayed replies
Write it in the team channel once. Do not rely on a verbal “I’ll be around.” Remote weeks fail on ambiguous availability, not on Wi-Fi alone.
Async habits that save relationships
When half the company is on trains:
- Batch questions into one daily note instead of twelve pings
- Label messages FYI vs Need reply after 8 Oct
- Avoid “quick calls?” that force someone to step out of a family dinner
- Keep documents in shared drives with clear filenames and owners
- Screenshot approvals you already have so you are not hunting for a stamp on 3 October
WeChat remains common — Chinese colleagues’ WeChat habits — but respect muted holidays. A sticker does not entitle you to an instant design review.
Where you work: flat, cafe, empty office
Home / flat: Protect a start and stop time so the week does not dissolve into continuous half-work. Roommate dynamics may shift if people travel — Mid-Autumn empty-flat story energy can reappear at Golden Week.
Cafe: Noise and payment norms still apply; keep bags close during holiday tourist rushes. Alipay / WeChat Pay.
Empty office: Confirm building access and HVAC schedules. Some towers run reduced services. Do not assume printers, canteens, or reception desks keep normal hours — Mid-Autumn / holiday open-closed patterns are a useful mindset even for October.
Coverage without becoming the holiday hero
You can be helpful without becoming the only human who never rests:
- Own a defined slice (monitoring, one product line, payroll exception queue)
- Set an auto-reply that names the next touchpoint after 7 October
- Escalate true emergencies; do not invent emergencies to feel useful
- Track hours if your contract cares — goodwill overtime still has a body cost
If leadership expects full synchronous presence while locals are off, ask for written priority lists. Ambiguous hero culture burns people by 10 October makeup day.
Cross-timezone traps
Global stakeholders may treat Golden Week as “China is offline” even when you are online — or the opposite, assume you can speak for every local decision. Scripts that help:
- “I can update status; approvals need Owner X after 8 Oct.”
- “Shipping is paused in-region; here is the contingency doc.”
- “I am reachable 10:00–16:00 CST; outside that, email.”
Do not fake authority you do not have. Remote weeks expose permission gaps.
Mental load and the city outside your window
While you type, the city may wear National Day decorations and tourist crowds — how cities decorate for National Day. Take one short evening walk so your week has a sensory edge that is not only a laptop. Then return. You are allowed a life even on a coverage rota.
Sleep matters before makeup Saturday 10 October. The calendar returns; your nervous system needs a runway.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until 30 September night to ask who approves invoices
- Spamming WeChat Moments-style updates into work groups
- Promising clients “same-day” local stamps you cannot obtain
- Working 14-hour guilt days then snapping at returning teammates
- Using the empty week to renegotiate everyone’s roadmap alone
A pre-leave checklist (28–30 September)
1. Publish your coverage hours
2. List blocked tasks and owners
3. Confirm building / VPN / MFA access
4. Warn external partners once, clearly
5. Schedule your own offline blocks so the week is not sludge
6. Plan one non-work ritual (park loop, call home, cook)
Tools, VPN, and boring reliability
Remote Golden Week fails on mundane access issues more often than on strategy. Before people leave:
- Test VPN from the network you will actually use (home broadband, not only office Wi-Fi)
- Confirm MFA backup codes live somewhere offline-safe
- Update laptop OS only if you have recovery time — not on 30 September night
- Download critical files you are allowed to keep locally under company policy
If your company bans local downloads, ensure cloud sync works and that holiday bandwidth in your building is adequate when neighbours stream movies all day.
Communicating with clients who do not know Chinese holidays
Some overseas clients treat “China holiday” as a rumour. Send one plain email before 1 October: dates, what will pause, what you will still monitor, and when normal replies resume. Attach or link the State Council holiday framing at a high level without oversharing internal politics. After the week, a short “we’re back” note prevents duplicate chase emails.
Money, rent, and personal admin while covering work
Do not let personal admin collide with coverage panic. Pay rent/utilities early if cycles fall inside the week — paying rent/utilities around Golden Week. Schedule pharmacy runs before shelves thin in your compound shop. Remote work still needs a stocked fridge.
Returning teammates on 8–9 October
When locals return, lead with gratitude and a written handoff, not a list of grievances about being “the only one working.” Share what moved, what waited, and what broke. Then take a real evening off before makeup Saturday 10 October if you can. Culture repair is part of remote holiday labour.
If you are remote outside China
Working from another country while the China team holidays adds timezone math. State your hours in CST and local time. Avoid implying you can walk into a Shanghai office problem you cannot physically touch. Courier and stamp tasks need an in-city buddy with clear scope — preferably arranged on 28–30 September, not via panicked voice notes on 4 October.
A sample day structure you can steal
- 09:30 CST: scan monitoring and overnight mail; post one status line
- 11:00: deep work on tasks that do not need local stamps
- 14:00: client window if overseas stakeholders expect it
- 16:00: park unanswered non-urgent items into an 8 October list
- Evening: offline — decorations walk or call home, not “just one more doc”
Adjust to your coverage contract. The point is edges. Remote Golden Week without edges becomes an eight-day blur that helps nobody.
Bottom line
Working remotely during Golden Week 2026 when your team leaves is an async design problem wrapped in a holiday. Set hours on the bridge workdays, protect approvals, refuse hero mythology, and meet teammates gently when they return after 7 October. Lovely China founded 2025 — [email protected].
Extra notes for contractors and teachers
Contractors should re-read invoice cutoffs before the week starts; finance teams may batch after the holiday. Teachers with international programmes may teach while local admin is offline — prepare parent-facing templates in advance (after Golden Week classroom energy is the return chapter). Whatever your role, write things down. Mouths travel; documents stay.
