Singles’ Day 11.11 2026 Presales: A Guide for Expats in China

Why expats keep hearing about “Double 11” in October

Singles’ Day, or Double 11 (双十一, shuāng shíyī), is named after 11 November, but in China the shopping season now starts weeks earlier. By mid-October, your colleagues will be comparing carts, your building’s parcel lockers will start filling up, and your phone will light up with coupons.

This guide explains how the Singles’ Day 2026 presale season generally works on the big platforms (Taobao, Tmall and JD), written for English-speaking expats who want to join in without getting tangled in deposits, final payments and return rules. We describe the usual mechanics, and we only give 2026 dates where the platforms have announced them. Always read the rules on the product page in the app before you pay.

If you are still setting up, start with our guide to Alipay and WeChat Pay for foreign visitors.

What has been announced for 2026 so far

Platforms usually brief merchants first and consumers later, so early dates come from merchant rules reported in Chinese media:

  • Tmall / Taobao: according to the 2026 Taobao and Tmall Double 11 merchant rules, as reported by Chinese business media on 22 September 2026, presale warm-up and deposit payment begin on 15 October, final payments begin at 20:00 on 20 October, and the main spot-sale period runs from 20:00 on 20 October to 23:59 on 13 November.
  • JD: at a merchant briefing on 23 September 2026, as reported by Chinese financial media, JD said its 11.11 campaign would start at 20:00 on 12 October, with further campaign days later in October.

Exact times can differ by category and shop, and consumer-facing pages may add details. Treat these dates as a planning guide and confirm in each app’s official event page.

How presales work

The deposit (定金)

A presale (预售) item lets you lock in a promotional price early by paying a deposit (定金, dìngjīn) during the presale window. Many listings advertise a deposit that is worth more than its face value when you pay the balance; the Chinese term often used is 定金膨胀 (“expanding deposit”). The product page shows the exact deposit, its value at checkout, and the final price.

The final payment (尾款)

Later, during the final payment window, you pay the remaining balance (尾款, wěikuǎn). The app sends reminders, but it is easy to miss one if notifications are off. Set your own phone alarm.

What happens if you miss the final payment

This is the part that catches newcomers. Deposit refund rules vary by listing. Some presale items say the deposit is not refundable if you fail to pay the balance for your own reasons; others allow refunds under certain conditions. Read the presale rules (预售规则) on the product page before paying, and use the in-app translation if needed. If a shop fails to deliver or the problem is on the merchant’s side, contact platform customer service.

Spot sales (现货)

Not everything is a presale. During the spot-sale period you simply buy at the event price and pay in full. If you dislike juggling two payments, spot sales are often easier.

Discounts, coupons and cross-store offers

Double 11 discounts stack in layers, and the rules change each year. Common elements include:

  • Platform coupons claimed in the event page
  • Shop coupons from individual stores
  • Cross-store threshold discounts (跨店满减): spend a set amount across participating shops and get money off
  • Direct price cuts marked on the product
  • Government trade-in subsidies for some appliances and electronics in some regions, subject to eligibility rules

The checkout page shows the final price after all eligible discounts. That number is what matters, not the headline banner.

Price protection (价保)

Many platforms and shops offer price protection (价格保护, jiàgé bǎohù): if the price of an item you bought drops within a stated period, you can claim the difference. Coverage, time limits and exclusions differ by platform, shop and product, and some promotional prices may be excluded. Before you rely on it, check the product page for a price-protection label and open the terms. JD and Tmall both have price-protection entries inside order details where you can apply.

Returns and the seven-day rule

China’s Consumer Rights Protection Law gives consumers who buy online the right to return most goods within seven days of receipt without giving a reason (七天无理由退货). There are legal exceptions, such as custom-made goods, fresh and perishable items, digital products downloaded online, and some opened or used items, and shops must mark items that are not eligible.

Practical tips:

  • Look for the “7天无理由” label on the product page.
  • Keep the packaging until you are sure.
  • Start returns from the order page, not by messaging the courier.
  • Some shops offer return-shipping insurance (运费险); check whether your order includes it.
  • For disputes, use the platform’s customer service and keep screenshots.

Delivery: lockers, stations and patience

Around the peak, parcel volumes surge. Expect:

  • Deliveries to parcel lockers like Hive Box (丰巢) or community pickup stations (such as Cainiao stations), with a pickup code sent by SMS or in the app
  • Occasional delays during the busiest days
  • Notices in your building or compound chat about pickup rules

Our courier delays guide and neighbourhood WeChat notices explain how to stay on top of parcel messages. For food and daily goods, delivery apps work in parallel.

Setting up as a foreigner

  • Account and phone number. A Chinese mobile number makes registration and verification much easier; see our SIM and eSIM guide.
  • Payment. Taobao and Tmall accept Alipay; JD supports WeChat Pay and other options. Foreign cards can be linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay, though some merchants or payment types may have limits.
  • Address. Save your address in Chinese characters, with building, unit and room numbers. Ask a colleague or your landlord to check it.
  • Language. Use your phone’s translation tools for product pages and chat with shop customer service. Shops answer questions before you buy.
  • Real-name rules. Some products, such as SIM cards, certain medicines or cross-border goods, need identity verification.

Sending gifts to family abroad

Some expats use Double 11 to send gifts home. The same Chinese media report on the 2026 merchant rules said Taobao’s Double 11 would launch in 20 overseas markets, with free shipping offered to 13 countries and regions. Which items and destinations qualify depends on the listing, so check the overseas shipping option on the product page and your home country’s customs rules before ordering.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Paying a deposit for something you have not compared elsewhere
  • Forgetting the final payment because app notifications are switched off
  • Assuming every item can be returned within seven days
  • Leaving parcels in a locker past its free storage period
  • Buying from unofficial links shared in group chats instead of the official app

A simple plan for Double 11

1. Make a list now. Decide what you actually need. Big-ticket items like appliances benefit most from careful comparison.

2. Add items to your cart and favourites before presales open.

3. Claim coupons on the event page as they appear.

4. Pay deposits only for items you are sure about.

5. Set alarms for final payment windows.

6. Compare checkout prices, not banners.

7. Check return and price-protection labels before paying.

8. Watch your locker codes as parcels arrive.
