Book early, book official, bring the same passport
The Palace Museum (Forbidden City) does not sell casual same-day walk-up tickets for ordinary visitors. Admission is real-name, timed, and capped. The museum’s own English visitor information states that daily visitor numbers are limited (the published figure on the international site is 40,000), that foreign visitors must provide passport numbers when booking, and that tickets open from 20:00 Beijing time seven days before the visit date.
Golden Week makes that system feel faster and less forgiving. National Day holiday travel in 2026 is expected to cover 1–7 October in the usual pattern. Mid-Autumn falls on Friday 25 September 2026, so late September into early October is one long planning season for Beijing. If the Forbidden City is a must, treat the 20:00 release like a hard appointment, not a vague reminder.
Official channels only
The Palace Museum states it has not authorized third-party institutions or individuals as ticket agents for general admission, the Treasure Gallery, the Gallery of Clocks, or exhibitions. Buy through the official WeChat mini program (故宫博物院 / Palace Museum) or follow the museum’s published official booking routes. The international information page is at intl.dpm.org.cn. If a website promises “guaranteed Golden Week tickets” for a markup, walk away. At best you are paying a middleman. At worst you risk a fake reservation that fails at Meridian Gate.
Save the official mini program on your WeChat home screen before release night. Hunt-and-peck searching at 19:59 is how people mistype into lookalike programs.
Prices published by the museum (confirm on booking day)
From the Palace Museum’s English ticket page:
High season (1 April–31 October): CNY 60 general admission. Low season (1 November–31 March): CNY 40 general admission. Treasure Gallery: CNY 10. Gallery of Clocks: CNY 10.
Student, senior, and free-admission categories exist under published rules (for example, children 6 and under free; visitors 60+ half price with ID; students in listed categories at reduced rates with proper ID). Bring the documents the policy requires. October 2026 falls in high season for the main ticket.
Refund and missed-appointment rules are detailed on the official page. Unused tickets can be refunded under stated deadlines. Missing too many appointments can trigger a booking ban for a period. Read the current text when you book. Do not assume a hotel concierge can erase a no-show.
The 7-day, 20:00 release (how to actually win a slot)
Know your target visit date. Count back seven days. Be ready at 20:00 Beijing time on that release evening. Log into the official mini program early. Have passport numbers, full names, and payment ready. At 20:00, select the date and session (morning or afternoon rules are shown in the booking UI; follow the entry window printed on your ticket). Enter each visitor’s passport details exactly as on the passport. Pay immediately. Unpaid holds disappear. Save the confirmation / QR as the app instructs. Screenshot as backup.
Peak holiday dates can disappear quickly. If the first refresh shows nothing, keep trying through the release window. Travel blogs often report unpaid inventory returning in waves for a while after 20:00. That is not a promise. It is a reason not to give up at 20:02.
Closed Mondays (except statutory holidays) still apply in the museum’s general rule. Check your calendar so you do not aim at a closed Monday by accident. During statutory holidays the Monday closure is typically lifted, but verify on the official notice for your date.
If you are booking for a family, assign one person to click while another reads passport numbers aloud. Typos waste the whole window.
Foreign visitors: passport at booking and at the gate
Non-mainland visitors book with passport (or other eligible travel documents listed by the museum). The same ID books only one ticket per visiting day. Enter at the Meridian Gate (Wumen), the south gate, with the original document used to book. Name mismatches between passport and reservation are how trips end at the scanner.
Middle names belong where the passport puts them. Match the machine-readable line when the form is ambiguous. Do not invent a “English name only” version.
If online booking fails, the museum’s English page describes an email reservation path for international visitors: send full name, passport number, and intended visit date to bookingticket@dpm.org.cn at least one calendar day in advance, within the booking window. Treat email as a backup, not your Golden Week Plan A. Volume is high and responses are not instant.
Payment setup before release night
You will pay inside the official flow. Alipay, WeChat Pay, and whichever international card options the current checkout offers should already work on your phone. Stable Wi-Fi helps. Hotel networks that captive-portal every five minutes do not. Use phone data if it is more reliable at 20:00.
Timing your Forbidden City day around autumn 2026
If you can visit before Golden Week, do. Late September weekdays after Teachers’ Day week (Teachers’ Day is 10 September; see our Teachers’ Day in China 2026 note for cultural context) are usually calmer than 1–7 October.
If your only Beijing window is Golden Week, book the release on time and keep a Plan B day inside the same trip. Inside the walls: a practical visit shape
Enter south at Meridian Gate. Move with the main axis at a pace you can sustain. The Treasure Gallery and Gallery of Clocks need their own tickets if you want them. Crowds thicken at the Hall of Supreme Harmony terrace and along the central route. Side halls are often easier on the shoulders.
Exit planning matters. Many visitors leave north toward Jingshan for a classic roofscape view. Bag storage, when offered, follows on-site rules and hours. Travel light. Security lines move faster when you are not carrying a week of luggage.
Allow hours, not a sprint. The architecture rewards looking up. The courtyards punish people who only chase photo spots in the densest knots. Bring water and sun protection for open stone yards. October sun still bites.
Checklist the night before
Ticket confirmation saved offline. Original passport for every person on the booking. Charged phone and a working QR payment app. Weather layer for open courtyards (October mornings can bite). No oversized luggage plans. Pack for security checks.
Also confirm your entry session window. Morning tickets have morning entry rules. Do not assume you can stroll in at 15:00 on a morning reservation.
What success looks like
Success is a confirmed official ticket for a date you can actually walk, paid with an app that already works, and a passport that matches the reservation. Everything else (perfect weather, empty terraces, soft light on yellow tiles) is bonus.
Book the release. Ignore scalpers. Give the palace a weekday if you can. Golden Week will still be busy. You do not have to make it harder than the rules already require.
