Huanglong in Autumn 2026: Travertine Pools, Altitude and Reservations

Terraced turquoise travertine pools of Huanglong surrounded by golden larches and dark conifers in autumn, Songpan County, Sichuan

Why Huanglong is worth the trip in autumn

Huanglong (黄龙, “Yellow Dragon”) is a long valley in Songpan County, northern Sichuan, where mineral-rich water has built thousands of terraced pools out of travertine. From above, the yellow-white rock looks like a dragon’s scales running down the mountain; up close, the pools shine turquoise, green and blue. UNESCO inscribed the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area on the World Heritage List in 1992, describing snow-capped peaks, the easternmost glacier in China, spectacular limestone formations, waterfalls and hot springs, and a population of endangered animals including the giant panda and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey.

Autumn is one of the best times to go. The Songpan County government’s autumn description of Huanglong talks about clear water, deep pool colours, gold and red slopes, and snow peaks above the valley. Larches and birches turn yellow, shrubs turn red, and the contrast with the blue pools is what most photographers come for.

Many travellers know Huanglong only as a side trip from Jiuzhaigou. It deserves its own planning, mainly because of one thing: altitude.

Huanglong in late October and November: what to expect

  • Colours: Mid and late October are usually the richest weeks for autumn colour. By November, many leaves have fallen and the landscape becomes quieter, with more snow on the peaks.
  • Water: Pool colour depends on water flow and light. Some upper pools can look lower or drier at times; there is no guarantee every terrace will be full.
  • Weather: Cold mornings, strong sun at midday, and the chance of early snow higher up. Paths can be icy on cold days.
  • Crowds: Much lighter than Golden Week (1–7 October 2026), especially on weekdays.

The official advice is consistent: Huanglong has a plateau climate with large day–night temperature differences and strong UV, so bring warm layers, sun protection and rain gear.

Altitude: the part people underestimate

Huanglong’s boardwalks sit well above 3,000 metres and climb steadily up the valley to the famous Five-Colour Pool (五彩池) near the top. Many visitors feel short of breath or get headaches here, even if they felt fine in Jiuzhaigou, which is lower.

The scenic area’s own safety notes say:

  • Do not do strenuous exercise. Walk slowly, even when the path looks easy.
  • If you feel unwell, rest at one of the oxygen stations (氧吧) along the route and ask staff for help, or go to the nearest hospital.
  • Visitors with conditions such as poorly controlled high blood pressure, heart disease, heart failure, poorly controlled diabetes or a history of stroke should think carefully before going, especially in the cold months.

According to the Songpan County government, there is a medical room about 50 metres from the main gate next to the visitor centre, and the Songpan County Hospital of Traditional Chinese and Tibetan Medicine is in Chuanzhusi town.

Practical altitude tips:

1. Take the cable car up and walk down. This is the classic plan. The cable car takes you to the upper part of the valley, and you walk downhill past the pools to the exit. Walking down is much easier at this altitude than walking up.

2. Go slowly and drink water. Skip alcohol the night before.

3. Sleep lower if you can. Ask about accommodation options before booking; many travellers base themselves in Chuanzhusi or Songpan. Our Songpan Ancient Town guide covers the area.

4. Talk to a doctor before travel if you have heart or lung conditions.

Tickets, seasons and reservations

Ticket seasons

According to the Songpan County government’s Huanglong page, the main scenic area’s peak season runs from 1 June to 15 December, with a full-price peak ticket of 170 yuan. The off-season runs from 16 December to 31 May, with a full-price ticket of 60 yuan. The Huanglong administration confirmed the 170 yuan peak full ticket (85 yuan half price) in its notice of 26 May 2026. Cable car and sightseeing bus tickets are separate. Late October and November visits are therefore still on peak-season pricing.

Opening times

Hours change by season and between announcements, so treat these as a guide only. The Huanglong administration’s 26 May 2026 notice said that from 1 June 2026:

  • The scenic area and the cable car open at 8:00
  • Ticket sales stop at 16:30
  • The cable car’s last ride up is at 17:00, and the last ride down at 17:30

An earlier Songpan County page listed a 7:30 opening. Check the official “黄龙” WeChat account or abatour.com the day before you go, because winter changes are usually announced shortly in advance.

Real-name booking

The scenic area uses real-name online booking and ticket checks and has a daily capacity of 25,000 visitors, according to the Songpan County government. Bookings are made through the “Huanglong” (黄龙) WeChat official account, the Aba Tourism website (abatour.com), or the “美丽阿坝” (Beautiful Aba) app. The ticket hotline listed on official pages is 400-088-6969 (option 1).

Online systems are built around Chinese ID cards. If you hold a passport and cannot complete the booking, ask your hotel or a local agent to help, or ask at the ticket office on arrival. Carry your original passport. For general tips on real-name reservations, see our attraction reservations guide.

Getting to Huanglong

By high-speed train

Since 30 August 2024, the Chengdu–Xining railway has run trains from Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai Station (黄龙九寨站). At opening, the fastest trains took 1 hour 39 minutes, according to People’s Daily’s Sichuan edition. Road transfers connect the station with Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou. Check current timetables on 12306; our guide on how visitors book trains on 12306 explains passport booking. The station was designed with oxygen equipment and medical staff for passengers affected by altitude.

By air

Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport serves the area, with road transfers to the scenic area. Flights can be affected by weather in the cold months, so leave slack in your schedule.

By road from Jiuzhaigou

Many travellers combine both parks. If you are doing the classic pairing, plan Huanglong on its own day rather than squeezing it in after a long drive. Our Jiuzhaigou autumn trip guide covers the bigger park.

A calm one-day plan for Huanglong

1. Early start from Chuanzhusi, Songpan or the station area. Eat a proper breakfast.

2. Cable car up as close to opening as possible.

3. Walk the upper valley toward the Five-Colour Pool and the Huanglong Ancient Temple area, at a slow pace.

4. Walk down the boardwalk past the terraced pools, stopping often. Allow several hours for the descent with photo stops.

5. Exit, eat, and rest. Do not plan another big activity the same afternoon.

Etiquette and safety rules

The official visitor notes are strict, and for good reason:

  • Stay on the boardwalks. Travertine is fragile, and stepping on it causes lasting damage.
  • No smoking, no open flames and no camping in the scenic area.
  • Do not pick plants, feed or disturb wildlife, or bring pets.
  • Follow staff instructions at all times.

What to pack for Huanglong in autumn

  • Warm layers, a windproof jacket, hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a sun hat
  • Light rain jacket
  • Shoes with good grip for wet or icy boardwalks
  • Water and snacks
  • Your passport and a phone with mobile payment set up (Alipay and WeChat Pay guide)

Pairing Huanglong with Chengdu

Most foreign visitors come via Chengdu. Before or after the mountains, spend a day at the Chengdu Giant Panda Base, then recover in a teahouse at People’s Park. Arriving by air? See our Chengdu Tianfu airport arrival guide.
