Longjing means Dragon Well. The name belongs first to a spring in the hills west of Hangzhou’s West Lake, then to a village, then to a pan-fired green tea with flat leaves like little spears. Fame has collected legends, counterfeits, and a hard sell. The tea itself is quieter than the pitch.
It tastes of spring beans and roasted chestnut, of something green that has been warmed rather than boiled. The liquor is yellow-green, not neon. If you have to sit with it for a minute before you can say what it is, you are probably closer to the real thing than to the stall that already told you.
What is Longjing tea, and which hills actually count?
Chinese authorities restrict the words. Under the national standard GB/T 18650-2008, Product of geographical indication — Longjing tea, the name Longjing covers three protected production areas in Zhejiang: West Lake, Qiantang and Yuezhou. Only tea from the West Lake area may be called West Lake Longjing, 西湖龙井. The rest is still Longjing. It is not a lesser species. It is a wider map. A label that says “Hangzhou Longjing” or “shipped from West Lake” is not the same as the protected name.
Hangzhou drew a still tighter line around the West Lake gardens. A 2001 municipal ordinance maps a protected belt and splits it into a first-grade reserve inside the scenic area and a second-grade reserve beyond. The first-grade names that keep returning are the old “Lion, Dragon, Cloud, Tiger, Plum” cluster: Shifeng, Longjing, Yunqi, Hupao, Meijiawu. The 2022 West Lake Longjing Protection and Management Ordinance, in force from 1 March 2022, defines the tea as a flat green tea made there from the traditional population trees, 群体种, and from approved cultivars such as Longjing 43, by spreading, wok-firing, resting and pan-shaping. Packed tea must carry a special traceability mark.
Meijiawu is the valley most visitors can actually walk without a map. Longjing Village is smaller, steeper, and more photographed. Shifeng, Lion Peak, is the name that tea people drop when they want to sound exact. You cannot taste a peak from a tin. You can walk the terraces and see that the bushes are low, the hills are wet, and the light is not fierce. Those are growing conditions, not poetry.
What does ‘pre-Qingming mean, and how are the seasons graded?
Pre-Qingming, 明前, means the leaf was picked before the solar term Qingming, Clear and Bright. In 2026 Qingming falls on Sunday 5 April. The term is one of the twenty-four solar terms, not a marketing season invented for foreigners. The buds that make it into the basket before that date grew slowly in cool air. They are the ones described as sweet, restrained, low in astringency. They are also the ones that run out.
A little later comes yuqian, 雨, tea taken before Grain Rain, 谷雨. In 2026 Grain Rain begins on Monday 20 April. The leaf is larger. The cup is often nuttier and more durable. Many Hangzhou drinkers, when they are buying for themselves rather than for a gift box, stop here. After Grain Rain the weather warms, the bush pushes harder, and more of the bitter catechins show up in the cup. Late spring tea from the same gardens can still be a good green tea. It will just be a louder one.
West Lake Longjing’s own trade grades, in the municipal association’s group standard, run through fine, special, first and second — 精品, 特级, 一级, 二级 — on shape, aroma, liquor, taste and leaf. None of this is a 2026 price list. Grade is a description you test in the cup.
Cultivars matter. Longjing 43 tends to move first in the spring; the dry leaf can look greener. The old population trees are often a more yellow-green, with a longer chestnut note. In 2026, Zhejiang reporting put the first Longjing 43 picking in the West Lake gardens on 19 March, with the population trees following later in the month. That is a harvest fact, not an invitation to pay whatever the first man with a wok asks.
What about autumn cups?
If you are reading this in late August 2026 and flying in for osmanthus, you will not be walking into the famous harvest. The celebrated cups are spring cups. Some gardens do take a light autumn flush. The leaf is thinner, the liquor more astringent, the aroma shorter. It can be a decent daily tea. It is not what Lion Peak is famous for, and it should not be sold to you as pre-Qingming.
What an autumn visitor is usually offered, if the seller is honest, is last spring’s tea that has been kept cold, dark and airtight. Green tea does not improve in a cupboard. A farmhouse fridge is more correct than a sunlit jar on a counter. Ask when it was picked. “Mingqian” in October is a storage claim, not a miracle. If the dry leaf smells of hay or perfume, walk away. If you want the flower of the season in the cup, that is osmanthus Longjing, a scented tea, and a different drink.
Hangzhou’s consumer bodies have warned that a figure far below the usual West Lake market is a quality or origin problem, not a favour. This page will not quote a 2026 price. Prices move by the day in late March.
Where can you taste Longjing near West Lake without a tour?
The cleanest answer is the China National Tea Museum, a national first-grade museum with two campuses: Shuangfeng Hall at 88 Longjing Road (open since 1991) and Longjing Hall at 268 Wengjiashan (open since 2015). The Shuangfeng side keeps a West Lake Longjing exhibition beside the bushes. The Longjing side sits up the slope by the village. You can see the leaf, the wok, and a cup that is not trying to close a sale. Check the museum’s own hours the week you go. A taxi from the lake, or a bus along Longjing Road, is the ordinary approach.
Then walk. Meijiawu is a valley road with terraces on both sides. Longjing Village is a tighter cluster around the well. Dragon Well itself is a spring, not a brand. You may drink at a farmhouse if you are invited without a chase, or at a tea house that lists the production area in writing. Use a glass cup. Water well under a rolling boil — tea teachers commonly stay around 80 to 85 °C — so the leaf does not stew. Three infusions are normal. The third tells you more than the first.
Mid-March to early April is when the harvest is happening and the woks are hot. The rest of the year the terraces are still worth walking; the theatre of picking is not. September and October are osmanthus in the next valley. Combine the two on foot if you like. Do not combine them with a shopping bus.
How do you avoid the hard sell in Hangzhou tea hills?
Hangzhou’s consumer council and market regulators repeat the same warnings every spring, because the script does not change.
Do not follow a stranger. A person who finds you at the lake, offers a free ride to my uncle’s garden,” and produces a husband stir-frying in a back room is running a play. Coincidence is rare. The tea in the wok may not be the tea in the bag.
Drink before you buy, and drink more than one grade. Watch the dry leaf go into the cup. Watch the same leaf get packed. Ask for the West Lake Longjing special mark. Farmer packs use an N-series traceability sticker; company packs use a Q-series sticker. Packed tea should also carry the geographical-indication mark where the seller claims the protected name. Scratch the code and look it up on the West Lake Longjing Tea Management Association’s own channel, not on a page the seller opens for you. If there is no mark, you are buying a story.
Buy from a named shop: a museum counter, an association-listed speciality store, a tea farmer who can show a grower card and a mark quota, a brand with an invoice that says 西湖龙井 and an address. Keep the invoice. Hangzhou’s 2022 ordinance lets regulators fine packed sales that skip the special mark. That only helps you if you have paper.
Refuse the price whispered after you have already sat down. A small packet you chose after two cups is the adult purchase. You do not owe a driver a tin.
The tea is a green tea from a mapped set of hills, fired in a wok, drunk in a glass. Pre-Qingming is a calendar line, not a personality. Autumn cups are honest if they are named as autumn, or as last spring stored well. Walk the museum. Walk Meijiawu. Pay for what you tasted.
FAQ
What is the difference between Longjing and West Lake Longjing?
Longjing is a protected Zhejiang green tea from three areas: West Lake, Qiantang and Yuezhou (GB/T 18650-2008). West Lake Longjing is only the West Lake gardens. “Hangzhou Longjing” on a bag is not a legal synonym.
What does pre-Qingming mean in 2026, and can I buy it in autumn?
Pre-Qingming means picked before Qingming, which is 5 April 2026. By September you would be buying spring tea that has been stored, or an autumn flush. Stored spring tea is normal if it has been kept cold and sealed. An autumn leaf sold as mingqian is a lie.
Where can a visitor taste Dragon Well tea near West Lake without being pushed to buy?
The China National Tea Museum (88 Longjing Road, and 268 Wengjiashan), then a self-guided walk in Meijiawu or Longjing Village. Drink first, check the N or Q traceability mark, take an invoice, do not get into a stranger’s car.
