Beijing in November 2026: Weather, What to Wear and Where to See Late Autumn

Is November a good time to visit Beijing?

Yes, as long as you pack for it. Beijing in November is the hinge between the city’s famous golden autumn and its dry, cold winter. Early in the month you can still catch yellow ginkgo avenues and red leaves in the hills; by the end of the month the trees are mostly bare, the heating is on, and the light over the Forbidden City’s roofs turns sharp and clear on good days.

For many travellers it is also a calmer month. The 2026 National Day holiday ends today, 7 October, and November has no national public holiday, so the big domestic crowds of Golden Week are long gone. Weekends at the most famous sites are still busy, but weekdays are much easier to plan.

This guide covers typical weather, what to wear, the dates that actually change things (the 1 November off-season switch at the Palace Museum and the 15 November heating start), and where to look for the last of the autumn colour.

Beijing weather in November: what the numbers say

The World Meteorological Organization’s World Weather Information Service lists these long-term averages for Beijing in November, based on the 1961–1990 baseline:

  • Average daily high: about 10°C (50°F)
  • Average daily low: about −0.4°C (31°F)
  • Average rainfall: about 6 mm, over roughly 3 days

October is noticeably milder (an average high of about 19°C), and December is colder again (an average high of about 3°C). The baseline is old, and recent Novembers can run a little warmer, but the overall pattern holds: dry air, big day–night swings, and nights near or below freezing, especially in the second half of the month.

What that feels like on the ground:

  • Early November: cool, often sunny days that can feel pleasant in the afternoon and cold after dark.
  • Mid November: the first properly cold mornings; wind makes it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
  • Late November: winter in all but name. The first light snow is possible in some years, but it is not something to plan a trip around.

Check the forecast a few days before you fly. The China Meteorological Administration and most weather apps issue cold-wave warnings when a sharp drop is coming.

What to wear in Beijing in November

Think layers rather than one heavy coat:

  • A warm mid-layer (fleece or light down) and a windproof outer jacket
  • A proper warm coat for the second half of the month or for early starts
  • Hat, gloves and a scarf if you plan to be on the Great Wall or out at sunrise
  • Comfortable walking shoes; you will cover a lot of stone paving
  • Lip balm, moisturiser and a refillable water bottle, because the air is very dry

Indoors it can be the opposite problem. Once heating starts, many buildings, trains and restaurants are warm, so a layer you can take off easily is better than one bulky sweater. For a full list, see our China autumn packing list for October and November.

Two dates that change your trip: 1 November and 15 November

1 November: the Forbidden City’s off-season begins

According to the Palace Museum’s official visitor page (dpm.org.cn), the museum runs its peak season from 1 April to 31 October and its off-season from 1 November to 31 March. In the off-season the museum closes at 16:30 instead of 17:00, and the standard entrance ticket price listed on the official site falls from 60 yuan to 40 yuan. It is closed all day on Mondays, except on statutory holidays.

Tickets must be reserved in advance with real-name details through the official website or the museum’s official channels. Book as soon as your dates are fixed and avoid third-party resellers. The official site also notes that the Yanxi Palace area was closed for conservation survey work from 1 September to 31 October 2026 and is scheduled to reopen on 1 November. Check the announcements page before you go, because opening areas change.

With shorter days, start early. Our three-day relaxed Beijing itinerary is built around morning visits for exactly this reason.

15 November: central heating starts

Beijing’s municipal heating regulations set the standard heating period from 15 November to 15 March, and the city government can start earlier if a cold spell arrives. For a short-term visitor this mostly means hotels and homes are warm, but it is worth knowing:

  • Late October and the first half of November can feel chilly indoors in older buildings before the heating comes on. Ask your hotel or homestay whether rooms have air-conditioning heat as a backup.
  • Air quality can vary more once the heating season starts, especially on still, windless days. Check a live air-quality app and plan indoor museum time for hazy days.

Where to see late autumn colour in Beijing

Ginkgo avenues in the city

Ginkgo is the star of a Beijing November. At a press conference on 23 September 2026, the Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau highlighted ginkgo-lined streets such as Chegongzhuang Street and Sanlihe Road, along with 50 “colourful parks” and 30 autumn street routes and city walks across the city. The bureau also launched a 2026 Beijing Autumn Colours Guide that updates leaf-colour progress and suggested viewing times using weather-monitoring data.

The cover photo shows the Diaoyutai Ginkgo Avenue in Haidian District in mid-November, a popular spot for photos when the leaves fall. Expect crowds at the weekend; go on a weekday morning. For more city ginkgo spots, see our autumn ginkgo walks in Chinese cities.

Imperial parks and temples

The big parks change week by week in late October and November:

  • Jingshan Park for the classic view over the Forbidden City’s golden roofs: Jingshan in autumn
  • Beihai Park, where the bureau listed a chrysanthemum show among this autumn’s events: Beihai in autumn
  • Temple of Heaven, whose old cypress groves stay green while the surrounding trees turn: Temple of Heaven guide
  • Summer Palace, best on a clear, windy day when the lake is bright: Summer Palace in autumn

Western Hills and further out

The bureau also named the ancient ginkgo trees at Badachu Park and the ginkgo and other colourful trees at Tanzhe Temple in its autumn recommendations. Red leaves in the Western Hills usually peak earlier than the city’s ginkgo, so if you arrive in the first days of November, check the Autumn Colours Guide before heading out. Our Fragrant Hills red leaves guide explains how to visit without the worst of the crowds, and the red-leaf photography etiquette guide covers park manners.

The bureau suggests checking events through the “首都园林绿化” (Capital Landscaping) social accounts and the “畅游公园” mini-program. Most park and attraction systems are in Chinese, so ask your hotel for help if needed.

The Great Wall in November

The Great Wall is excellent in November: clearer air on good days, fewer people, and hills turning brown and gold. It is also cold and windy on the ridgelines, and cable car or toboggan schedules can change outside peak season. Bring gloves, start early, and check the official operator’s notices for your chosen section the day before.

Food that makes a cold Beijing evening better

November is when Beijing food makes the most sense:

Practical tips for a November trip

  • Daylight is shorter. Plan outdoor sights for late morning to mid-afternoon and keep museums and food for the evening.
  • Use the subway. It is warm, fast and avoids traffic: Beijing subway for foreign visitors.
  • Set up mobile payments before you fly. Many small food stalls only take QR payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay for foreign visitors.
  • Carry your passport. You need it for many real-name ticket bookings and entry checks.
  • Keep one flexible day for weather. If a cold wave or hazy day arrives, swap the Great Wall for museums.
